What Is SIP Protocol?

SIP stands for session initiation protocol. So, SIP protocol is the procedure that initiates phone calls. This telecommunications protocol is used to signal and control multimedia communication sessions. So not only is SIP protocol used for telecommunication, but it is also used for video calls.

Two Phases of Voice Calling In SIP Protocol

There are two distinct phases of initiating an SIP phone call. The first phase is the call setup, which is essentially the collection of details needed to get two phones to communicate. This phase of phone calling is the job of SIP protocol. After gathering details and information, the next phase of data transfer can begin (voice packets moving between two phones).

Why Use SIP Protocol?

With computers and smartphones, people around the world can communicate with SIP protocol. Utilizing VoIP with SIP protocol greatly reduces communication costs. In fact, a call between two SIP protocol users, anywhere in the world, is free. Many businesses utilize this technology with PBX.

Benefits and Features of SIP Protocol

SIP protocol is a very flexible protocol with depth. The general design of the SIP protocol is to setup real-time multimedia sessions between groups of users. So, not only can SIP protocol initiate calls, it can also be used for video and audio meetings. The text-based SIP protocol is centered around a request and response model, which also makes it easy to debug. This is because messages are easy to see and build. Yet, SIP protocol still remains a fairly simple protocol with powerful features in order to model the functions of PBX.

Features for SIP protocol include:
