What is SIP?
SIP stands for session initiation protocol. So, in other words, SIP is the process of initiating a phone call session—something we, as phone users, probably don’t think about when making a call. This telecommunications protocol is used to indicate and control multimedia communication sessions. So not only is SIP used for telecommunication, but also video calls.
The Two Phases of Voice Calling
There are two distinct phases of initiating a call. The first phase is the call setup, which is basically the collection of details needed to allow two phones to communicate with one another. This phase of phone calling is the job of SIP. After gathering details and information, the next phase of data transfer can begin.
Why Use SIP?
With computers and smartphones, people around the world can communicate with SIP. Perhaps the biggest benefit of SIP is the reduction of communication costs. A call between two SIP users from anywhere in the world is cost free. It’s common practice for businesses to use this technology by way of PBX.
Benefits and Features of SIP
SIP is a very flexible protocol with depth. The general design of the SIP is to setup real-time multimedia sessions between groups of users. So, not only can SIP initiate calls, it can also be used for video and audio meetings. SIP is a text-based protocol based off a request and response model, which also makes it easy to debug. This is due to the fact that messages are easy to see and build. At the same time, SIP remains a fairly simple protocol with powerful features in order to model the functions of PBX.
ProTel’s SIP Services
There are many aspects of SIP services. At ProTel, we focus on the following:
Session initiation protocol trunking is the use of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) to enable a connection between the private branch exchange (PBX) and the Internet.
SIP protocol is the procedure that initiates phone calls. This telecommunications protocol is used to signal and control multimedia communication sessions. So not only is SIP protocol used for telecommunication, but also video calls.
SIP VoIP Service
SIP is the standard method in the industry used to achieve VoIP. Without SIP, VoIP would not be functional. These two methods work together to bring communication through utilization of the Internet.
There are two different kinds of SIP phones, hardware and software based. Hardware-based SIP phones use special hardware to receive and make calls using the Internet, while software-based phones allow any computer to be used as a telephone (as long as there is equipment to hear and be heard by callers).
SIP Response Codes
Transactions between two end users are made up of SIP request codes and SIP response codes. Any SIP user agent can generate these codes.
SIP Call Flow
Generally speaking, the term “call flow” refers to the path of how calls are navigated from beginning to end. SIP call flow can be a simple, linear map between two SIP users, or a very complicated series of destinations to reach the final conversation between two users.
