What is SIP?

SIP stands for session initiation protocol. So, in other words, SIP is the process of initiating a phone call session—something we, as phone users, probably don’t think about when making a call. This telecommunications protocol is used to indicate and control multimedia communication sessions. So not only is SIP used for telecommunication, but also video calls.

The Two Phases of Voice Calling

There are two distinct phases of initiating a call. The first phase is the call setup, which is basically the collection of details needed to allow two phones to communicate with one another. This phase of phone calling is the job of SIP. After gathering details and information, the next phase of data transfer can begin.
